Meet Sumayah Muie: 2024 FOSSI Scholar Attending North Carolina A&T State University

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Sumayah Muie, and I'm from Washington, DC. As an incoming freshman this fall, I'm thrilled to share that I have decided to study mechanical engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. From a very young age, I have always had an interest in STEM activities and working with my hands. Going into college, I will be able to explore my passion for engineering. As the oldest of four kids, I feel it is my duty to be an example to my younger siblings and follow my passion as I take on the challenge of changing the world in a field that is lacking diversity. I am super excited, honored, and thankful to be embarking on this journey with the help of the FOSSI scholarship.

My dream career is to be a mechanical engineer. I have always had an interest in knowing how things work, how they are designed, and the problem-solving aspects of different items.

FOSSI: Why are you passionate about pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field?

Receiving the FOSSI scholarship is important to me because it will provide financial support to cover outstanding balances for tuition, books, and fees. The support I gain will aid in my completion of college, which is not possible without the help of scholarships. Additionally, this program will provide opportunities such as mentorships and internships during my time in college that were not previously available to me. It will also allow me to get closer to reaching my future career goals, including becoming a mechanical engineer. My dream career is to be a mechanical engineer. I have always had an interest in knowing how things work, how they are designed, and the problem-solving aspects of different items. With a mechanical engineering degree, I will be able to explore and make a living through something I enjoy.

FOSSI: Share a few fun facts about yourself.

Some fun facts about me include taking engineering classes while in high school. As a student at a technical high school, I had the opportunity to take engineering classes and advance my studies at a young age. Additionally, I have been a mountain biker for the past three years. Over time, I was able to learn new skills that help in both athletic activities and as a future engineer. Finally, I have had three engineering internships throughout my high school career. One was with Acquired Data Solutions, where I developed coding and 3D modeling skills, and I have a future summer internship with NASA Rover, exploring machine tools to build a human-powered rover.
