Meet Ashley Charles: 2025 FOSSI Scholar Attending Prairie View A&M University

FOSSI: Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Ashley Charles, and I’m from Houston, Texas. I’m passionate about chemical engineering and excited to pursue this path at Prairie View A&M University. Growing up, I faced academic challenges but overcame them through determination, faith, and support from my community. These experiences have fueled my desire to create innovative solutions that improve access to clean water in underserved communities.

Being part of an HBCU matters deeply to me because it provides a strong sense of belonging, cultural pride, and a supportive environment where I can grow academically, socially, and spiritually. Throughout high school, I’ve served as Historian for Student Council, Secretary of both the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, and have been a Class Board Representative all four years. I’m also a proud member of the NAACP Houston Chapter, the Science National Honor Society, and Future Business Leaders of America. These leadership roles and community service projects have helped me develop confidence, communication skills, and a heart for serving others. My faith plays a central role in my life, guiding me to stay resilient and intentional in everything I do. I look forward to connecting with peers and mentors through the FOSSI scholarship program as I continue my journey in STEM and leadership.

FOSSI: What moment or experience sparked your love for STEM?

My love for STEM began when I discovered how much I enjoyed the hands-on experience of labs and experiments. Being able to apply what I learned in class to real situations made science come alive for me. But what really pulled me in was understanding the math behind it all. When I could see the “why” through equations, everything clicked and left me hungry to learn more. That combination of doing and understanding sparked my passion for STEM and inspired me to dive deeper into the field.

FOSSI: What did it feel like when you found out you received the FOSSI scholarship?

When I found out I received the FOSSI scholarship, I felt overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. It felt like all of my hard work, late nights, and moments of doubt had finally paid off. I was proud not just of myself but of what this opportunity represents for my future. Knowing that I was chosen from so many talented applicants reminded me that I am capable and that I belong in STEM. It was a moment of confirmation and a blessing that I’ll carry with me as I take the next steps in my journey.

What kind of impact do you hope to make ten years from now?

Ten years from now, I hope to make a real difference as a chemical engineer by developing cleaner, safer water systems for underserved communities. I want my work to blend innovation with compassion—using science to tackle problems that impact people’s daily lives. I also hope to mentor young Black girls in STEM, showing them they not only belong in these spaces but can lead and excel in them. Beyond my career, I want to be remembered as someone who stayed rooted in faith, lifted others up, and created lasting change.

FOSSI: What are some surprising or unique facts about you?

As the oldest child, I naturally act like everyone’s second mom—it’s just who I am. People are often surprised that I can sing, act, and dance since I’m so focused on STEM. I’m always ready for a spontaneous song or dance party to break up the day. I also love public speaking and have grown more confident leading events and sharing my ideas with others. I have a huge heart for community service, and I’m completely obsessed with motivational quotes and Bible verses—they keep me grounded and fuel my inspiration every day.
