FOSSI: What moment or experience sparked your love for STEM?
Throughout my childhood, I always had a keen curiosity for the world around me. My high school chemistry class, however, broadened my outlook on the world, drawing my attention to the many things I consume and how they're made. The course encouraged me to think critically and apply scientific principles to explore the bounds of chemical processes. Though I've always admired science, combining its creative aspects with technology, engineering, and mathematics amplified my desire for growth and continued learning. As I explored my options, I gained a deep appreciation for STEM.
...I was relieved to know that my personal, professional, and educational goals were made attainable with the help of the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative.
FOSSI: What did it feel like when you found out you received the FOSSI scholarship?
When I received the call, I was completely and utterly elated. Acknowledging the sacrifices I've made to advance my academic journey, I was relieved to know that my personal, professional, and educational goals were made attainable with the help of the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative. Along with this feeling came joy and excitement about the mentorship, leadership, and immersive opportunities made possible through FOSSI and its sponsoring companies—opportunities that will enhance my undergraduate experience and foster success in my future endeavors.
FOSSI: Who inspires you, and what have they taught you about what’s possible?
Although I’m inspired by many, my ultimate inspiration is my aunt, Dr. Gladys B. West. Dr. West deepened her passion for mathematics through her integral contributions to developing the Global Positioning System (GPS). Growing up, she worked as a sharecropper in Sutherland, Virginia, to support herself and her family. Education wasn’t easily accessible for African Americans, but she persevered and excelled in pursuing her dreams. Her trailblazing efforts and personal anecdotes have inspired me to always pursue opportunities for growth and knowledge despite the hardships, obstacles, and doubt that I may face along the way.
FOSSI: What kind of impact do you hope to be making ten years from now?
In ten years, I hope to inspire Black youth to explore their interests in STEM through interactive service initiatives and educational advocacy. Through my conscious efforts to improve chemical design processes, I hope to contribute to a culture that prioritizes community health while amplifying minority presence to promote diversity and equity in scientific innovation. Additionally, I look forward to forming meaningful connections with professionals in my field to gain valuable insight and collaborate on projects that will propel STEM forward.
FOSSI: What are some surprising or unique facts about you?
One unique fact about me is that I've been dancing competitively for 10 years. On both the regional and national levels, I've competed alongside my beloved teammates at the advanced level, and it has truly been one of the most fulfilling journeys. Additionally, traveling is one of my favorite things to do. So far, I've traveled to four foreign countries and have been immersed in their beautiful cultures and histories. I hope to travel to South Africa in the coming year!
